During an economic downturn such as the one being faced worldwide in 2001, many workers face redundancy and should be prepared for all its consequences. In Australia, employees who have been made redundant should take a taxable redundancy package before August 20th, to avoid the new super surcharge tax that will apply.

Battler boost: the re-election of the Coalition government may be bad news for the superannuation industry but, as Daryl Dixon reports, it's the bee's knees for low income earners

Article Abstract:

The Coalition Party victory in the recent election means that the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia and the superannuation industry it represents will have to endure tax provisions of the Howard regime. Tax initiatives of the Coaltition government are discussed. A table outlining the top 5 Australian equity trusts by 3-yr performance, the top 5 global trusts by 3-yr performance, the top bank term deposits, the top debentures, the top bonds, the top banks at call and the top 5 cash management trusts is included.

This article discusses the plans of New South Wales to allow some employees to continue membership in the State Superannuation Scheme until they are 55 years old, even if they retire at age 50. Relevant points include this plan allowing employees to keep the same benefits until the normal retirement age of 55 while encouraging volunteers for lay offs, tax concessions for some employees, and the benefit of this plan to the state's finances.
