Beating the back ache
Article Abstract:
Almost 300,000 people underwent spinal fusion surgery in 1998, but a new procedure called intradiscal electrothermal annuloplasty takes only 15 minutes to perform under local anaesthetic, at a fraction of the cost. Results of 700 patients who have undergone the new treatment are promising. 80% of recipients report reduced pain, and half of those taking narcotic painkillers stopped taking drugs after the surgery.
