Bell Atlantic offers Internet trust to speed GTE merger
Article Abstract:
Bell Atlantic Corp is proposing that GTE Corp's Internet asset be placed into a trust in order to close its $74-billion merger with GTE. Bell Atlantic would not be able to take control of the trust until the company receives permission from regulators to offer long-distance phone service in most of its region. If approved, the merger would form the biggest local phone service provider. In addition, Bell Atlantic would gain access to GTE's Internet assets and use them to compete against MCI WorldCom, SBC Communications and AT&T.

MCI, Sprint optimistic merger will be OK'd
Article Abstract:
MCI WorldCom and Sprint expect their $115 billion merger to be given federal approval by the Justice Dept and the Federal Communications Commission. Some reports indicate that regulators will reject the merger due to its potential damage on competition in the long distance telephone market. Officials from both companies believe that the merger will still prosper due to the pending entry of Bell Atlantic and SBC Communications in the same market and the expanded capacities of Qwest and other competitors.
