NBC chooses new Bay area affiliate

Article Abstract:

NBC has signed KNTV in San Jose, CA, to be its new affiliate in the San Francisco Bay area. KNTV, owned by Granite Broadcasting and an ABC affiliate for over 35 years, will pay NBC $362 million over nine years starting 2002. NBC's former Bay Area affiliate, KRON-TV, failed to come to terms with NBC, which demanded $10 million per year to extend KRON's affiliation beyond 2001.

FCC rules keep cap on TV stations

Article Abstract:

The FCC announced on May 30, 2000 that it will not amend its rule that sets a limit to the number of TV stations that TV broadcasting companies could own. The rule, which allows companies to own several TV stations as long as they do not reach more than 35% of the country's viewers, was included in the agency's mandatory review of its rules. Some broadcasting companies, particularly the big four networks, strongly opposed the rule. Fox Television Stations Inc plans to challenge the rule in a federal court.
