The UN appointed Chretien as a special envoy to Central Africa, which is undergoing renewed violence between rival Tutsi and Hutu ethnic groups. Chretien previously served as Canadian ambassador to Zaire, Burundi and Rwanda from 1978-81, and is familiar with the region's problems.
