Group foraging revisited: information sharing or producer-scrounger game?
Article Abstract:
Producer-scrounger (PS) game models offer a more useful paradigm for the study of group foraging. A PS game model of participating in decisions in groups of varying sizes is used to show that restraint in joining behavior results in a higher mean intake rate, but affects variance. Adaptive changes in the joining behavior of group foragers should thus be made to resolve the trade-off between mean and variance of intake rate. Such a feature is not taken into account in information sharing models of group foraging.
