Australia's car industry, having experienced surging growth in 1997, may confront a sizeable drop in 1998 sales due to the Asian financial crisis and a devalued Australian dollar. Asian importers such as Mazda, Toyota, Nissan, and Honda will aggressively pursue export sales, increasing competition to local manufacturers. All sectors of the automobile industry grew in 1997 except the luxury market.

Australian automotive components industry hopes that the new Axcess Australia will boost automotive export business. Axcess Australia was revealed at SAE Expo in Detroit and will be shown at the inaugural Automechanika Asia on Apr. 27-29, 1998. More than 130 companies helped build Axcess Australia, and they hope it fosters cooperative developement programs similar to those in Japan and Germany.
