Brains outsmart money
Article Abstract:
The Australian federal government has envisioned a full-fee-paying scheme for university students, who have largely rejected it. The former Labor and present Coalition governments want universities to generate more and more of their income from sources other than the government. In 1996 after the election the Howard government cut spending on higher education in the first big reduction in 15 years. Institutions had to meet the cost of a large salary increase for staff. Together the actions meant a budget cut of 25% and 8000 jobs may be gone.
