Broker report targest bank mergers

Commission Direct Inc. of Toronto, Ontario, has outlined to 100 mutual and pension fund managers a report focusing on increasing bank stocks in Canada, due for delivery in June 1998. The report, Merger Mania, what does it mean for banks shareholders and customers?, is being sold to clients of the securities trading and independent research provider. Commission Direct president and CEO Wayne McAlphine said the banks were targeted due to complaints of institutional clients over a lack of indepth, objective research on the proposed bank mergers.

Ontario's failed Minaki Lodge lures yet another taker

Businessman John Newsome is taking a chance with plans for acquiring the failing Minaki Lodge in Ontario, Canada. The timberland resort opened in the 1920s and offered promise as a vacation spot with tennis courts and a nine-hole golf course. However, the resort has been acquired by the government in 1974 to avoid bankruptcy and save on government loans connected with Minaki's failing operations.
