Writable and rewritable compact disc (CD) drives, available from such major manufacturers as Kodak and Hewlett-Packard, will allow consumers to back up much more material on a CD than they are able to back up on floppy discs. Floppy discs typically contain 1.44 megabytes of material. CDs will contain 5.2 gigabytes of text and images. Writable CD drives cost from $500 to $800 and blank writable CDs cost from $2 to $5. Rewritable CD drives cost from $700 to $900 and blank rewritable CDS cost $35.

Australian reseller Voice Perfect Systems also has a base model that can transcribe plain English, but no dialect dictation. The Dragon software enables users to voice-command a computer to locate a document or carry out other functions.
