CP slashes 1,900 jobs as rail carnage continues

Calgary, Canada-based Canadian Pacific Railway Co, the No. 2 railway company in Canada, is eliminating 1,900 jobs, or 10% of its workforce, by the end of 2000, in an effort to survive the intense competition posed by larger rail companies and trucks. The affected jobs will include over one- third from the administration, 40% to 45% from maintenance and 25% to 30% from train operations.

Wunderkind's prints all over bold deal
Article Abstract:
The preemptive deal to sell BP Amoco PLC's Canadian oil assets to Canadian Natural Resources Ltd and Penn West Petroleum Ltd has been attributed to oil patch wunderkind Murray Edwards. The two Calgary-based companies have closed a deal to acquire the properties even before the official auction process had started. Edwards is chairman of Penn West and a director of Canadian Natural.

Chevron discovers major gas well in NWT
Article Abstract:
Chevron Canada Resources Ltd has discovered a major gas well in northern Canada. The well, called K9, is located 25 kilometers northwest of Fort Liard in the Northwest Territories. The company invested C$16 million to drill the well to a depth of 3,040 meters. Chevron estimates that the production of raw, natural gas from K9 will reach 70 million to 100 million cubic feet a day.
