Calgary firm caught in U.S. wireless debate
Article Abstract:
Software company Cell-Loc Inc of Calgary, Alberta, has asked the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to call off its plan to move back the deadline by a year on its plan to have telephone companies begin tracing all 911 emergency calls made from wireless phones. The FCC said that the industry may not have the technology yet to meet its target date of 2001. However, Cell-loc said that is already marketing a system that can pinpoint the location of callers with 10 meters using existing phones, which is compatible with most wireless networks.

Opinions split on magazine legislation
Article Abstract:
A bill that virtually bans Canadian editions of foreign magazines will be helpful to locally grown magazines, say its supporters. Supporters of the legislation called Bill C-55 say that so-called split-run magazines have an unfair advantage over local competitors because they spend little, if any, on publishing local content and yet enjoy Canadian advertising. Critics, however, say foreign magazines will actually result in an increase in advertising dollars.
