Childhood immunizations: why haven't millions of youngsters gotten all their shots?
Article Abstract:
Between 37 and 56% of preschool children in the US have not received the immunizations they need, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Why this is so depends on who is asked. Many see the problem as an economic one, saying the vaccine industry has unfairly raised prices at the expense of the poor. Others cite complacency towards the issue by parents and doctors who do not see diseases like polio as a threat. Bill Clinton tried to allocate more money to immunization programs, but was stopped in Congress by budget concerns and vaccine industry influence.

Should public schools devote more resources to special programs for gifted students?
Article Abstract:
Disagreement exists on whether American schools should put more effort into gifted students' programs. Proponents claim that the gifted will lose motivation to achieve great things in life if they remain in regular school environments which do not challenge them. Opponents claim that all students need better school environments, and that should be the democratic goal since even mediocre students can benefit from improved education.

Educating gifted students: are U.S. schools neglecting the brightest youngsters?
Article Abstract:
Controversy exists on whether American schools are neglecting their gifted students. Advocates note that educators can assume that gifted children need less help to learn, and so the students may receive less attention and less emotional support than other students. For example, while 1997 federal aid to poor or handicapped student programs totals $7.2 billion, the total federal aid for the gifted is merely $7 million.
