Cold-fusion confusion
Article Abstract:
Chemists B. Stanley Pons andMartin Fleischmann claimed they have found the means by which atoms of hydrogenisotope deuterium can be fused within a palladium rod at room temperatur. They have also reportedly been able to release quadruple of the energy that was put in. Pons and Fleischmann gave it the terminology 'cold fusion.' At a time of stagnant progress in development, scientific researchers welcomed cold fusion with enthusiasm. Unfortunately, they had been unable to duplicate the said results. Pons and Fleischmann refused to cooperate, and cold fusion was disregarded by all except for a handful of researchers.

Cold fusion gets a warm reception in Japan
Article Abstract:
Many scientists in Japan continue with their research on cold fusion although the proposed scientific technology had been discredited. Japanese scientists have opted to take some risk and explore the credibility of cold fusion. Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry has allocated as much as $25 million for four-year cold fusion research. At least 15 Japanese firms are expected to support the scientific endeavor. In reality, however, the funding represents only three percent of the total fusion budget, and there are still many Japanese scientists who do not advocate cold fusion.
