Computer problems delay installation of new weather radar
Article Abstract:
An advanced weather radar system for the National Weather Service is delayed by production problems. The system, which would allow weather forecasters to view weather systems in motion, would detect tornadoes before they strike and improve other types of forecasting. Three Federal departments - Commerce, Transportation and Defense - have contracted to buy a total of 165 of the devices for $359 million. Most are for the Weather Service, which is part of the Commerce Department. Government officials are concerned about an uncertain financial situation at Unisys Corp, which manufactures the systems. Unisys has large debts, and the company reported a $356.8 million deficit in the 3rd qtr. The company did not pay a dividend to shareholders this year, and it has announced that it will eliminate 5,000 jobs. So far, Unisys's financial problems are apparently not related to delays in installing radar systems.

Olivetti is said to plan 7,000 layoffs in slump
Article Abstract:
Ing C Olivetti e Compagnie SpA lays off 7,000 employees in an effort to deal with intense foreign competition and slumping profits. The layoffs involve 4,000 employees in Italy and 3,000 abroad. The computer maker agrees with union leaders that the layoffs will come through inducements and early retirements. Analysts expected the layoff but did not anticipate that it would be that large. Olivetti has been trimming employees over the years to deal with diminishing profits and what some observers see as a restructuring of Italian industry. Analysts suggest that what is happening at Olivetti will happen at most Italian companies in the near future.
