Computers for all? Many can't use them
Article Abstract:
Nearly 25% of all American adults will remain unconnected to the Internet because they are illiterate and would not be able to read what is on the screen even if they owned a computer. An exhaustive 1992 study by the Education Dept found that more than 44 million adults were functionally illiterate and 50 million others with slightly better skills were having difficulty coping with the reading requirements of daily life. Efforts to improve this have been quite inadequate. Reading and writing are habits that must continue for a lifetime as they enable people to find a sense of place and worth in a rapidly changing world.

The state-of-the- art facility was to have replaced the overcrowded Belmont High School. The cost of the complex exceeded $170 million, making it the most expensive school built in the US. The school was to have served teenagers in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Los Angeles, CA. The board has opted to identify alternative sites for new schools in the same area.

California casino boom draws fire
Article Abstract:
The growing tendency of Indian tribes to build additional casinos on their tribal lands is causing concern among the communities where their casinos are located. Residents in the vicinity of their casino projects are worried that the new developments could have an averse effect on traffic conditions, wastewater disposal and cause congestion. California voters approved gambling thinking that its effect would minimal because Indians did not own land in any major city.
