DEFYING FORECAST, JOB LOSSES MOUNT FOR A 22ND MONTH
Article Abstract:
The Dept. of Labor is reporting a loss of 93,000 jobs in Aug. 2003. Although the unemployment rate dropped from 6.2 to 6.1 percent, the statistic does not reflect an accurate count of jobless Americans due to data collection methods used by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Despite the 22-month economic recovery, businesses remain hesitant to create new jobs as long as they can maintain current productivity standards with current workers. The US economic growth rate in goods and services increased to 3.1 percent in the second quarter from 1.4 in the last two quarters.
