The Australian National Party hopes supporting the building of dams to divert water in southern and western Australia will help in its political battles against the One Nation party, which is strong in Australian rural areas. Deputy Prime Minister and National Party leader Tim Fischer wants to boost water programs in the political agenda and include private companies in the implementation. Other issues important to the rural populace include telecommunications and public transportation.

The medical, legal, pharmacist, architectural, and other professions feel the pressure imposed by a mandated review by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The ACCC has been given federal funds to propose by 2000 regulations that ensure competition within professions and consumer satisfaction. States wish to use the funds for independent reviews, which may lead to fragmented professional regulations rather than a uniform national policy.

Marriage of convenience

Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Democrat leader Meg Lee agreed in principle on Howard's plan for the goods and services tax (GST). The agreement brought both parties to a more politically central position. Democrats are interested in seeing the details of the GST proposal before giving unqualified support. The Australian Labor Party is upset at the Democrats for the cooperation they have given Howard.
