Death marched beside them

Article Abstract:

The horror story about more than 2400 Australian and British prisoners of war (PoWs) who had died at the hands of the brutal Japanese in 1942 on the outskirts of Sandakan, northeastern coastline of Borneo is narrated. The greatest tragedy of Sandakan and its death marches, however, rests in the bungling and buck-passing of the military leadership with tourists visiting the Sandakan-Ranau trails to experience Australia's soldiers suffering through in 1945, and earlier.
