Article Abstract:

Australian political leaders have ignored the problems of Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport since 1973. However, in 1998, the airport's problems with delayed or cancelled flights have reached crisis levels. With plans for a second airport at Badgerys Creek, a survey concluded that residents around the potential site intended to vote for Independent candidates or Pauline Hanson's One Nation party.

Federal politics: new Labor: no dissent, no debate, no passion

Article Abstract:

The 1998 national conference of the Australian Labor Party focused on avoiding dissent and delivering consensus. There was little discussion of alleviating the problems of pensioners and the unemployed. The conference passed an economic platform that was a compilation of vague generalities. Labor's conferences are becoming an anachronism that could be conducted electronically.

More questions than answers at talkfest

Article Abstract:

Delegates at Australia's Feb. 1998 Constitutional Convention discussed whether Australia should become a republic, the nature of the appointment of the head of state, and when such change should occur. Associated issues were also discussed such as Australia's adoption of a new preamble to the Constitution or bill of rights.
