Discovery could ease cancer for many

The New England Journal of Medicine has published a new study by Canadian researchers on a less lethal form of colorectal cancer, which is the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths. The study was co-authored by Dr. Steve Gallinger of Toronto, Ont.-based Mount Sinai Hospital's Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute.

Hormone therapy raises cancer risk, researchers find

Rockville, Md.-based National Cancer Institute researchers have discovered that hormone therapy may lead to breast cancer in some women. The study, which warns of the danger of an estrogen and progestin combination, surveyed over 46,000 postmenopausal women.

The Canadian Cancer Society has issued a new report that reveals cancer-related death rates have declined on several fronts. Cancer, which is the leading cause of premature death in Canada, will account for an estimated 65,000 deaths in Canada in 2001.
