The Australian federal government has been working towards developing a free trade deal with the United States, but the deal is being held up by agricultural issues. The US is reluctant to allow countries such as Australia and Mexico to have unrestricted entry into its agricultural markets, and it is particularly protective of its sugar market.

Australia Prime Minister John Howard is moving towards signing a free trade agreement with the United States, to accompany the ANZUS security treaty signed fifty years ago. The alliance could cause major changes in the Australian economy, and could alter Australia's image in Asia.
