Drabinsky suing KPMG for $26-million

Livent Inc.'s former chairman, Garth Drabinsky, has filed a C$26-million lawsuit against KPMG for allegedly conducting an illegal investigation on him. The lawsuit seeks damages for breach of confidence and an injunction to keep KPMG off the investigation. However, according to KPMG's general counsel, Peter Sahagian, the company's investigation for Livent is being performed in an ethical and professional manner, and in accordance with the standards regulating their business. Meanwhile, Livent spokesman Don Nathan said that they intend to continue the investigation.

Canadian Salt fined $600,000

Canadian Salt Company Ltd of Pointe Claire, Quebec, has been fined C$600,000 for misleading the Ontario's Workplace Safety and Insurance Board about the six accidents that happened between 1996 and 1998 at its two salt mines near Windsor, Ontario. The accident reports are used to determine whether the companies qualify for refunds of employees' compensation premiums. The company may have to return the hundreds of dollars worth of refunds that it received for its supposedly good workplace safety record.
