Drift nets: stripmining the sea
Article Abstract:
Drift nets kill of nearly all marine creatures that fall into their snare, and have caused many environmental groups to call for a ban on deep sea fishing. Since the natural resources of the open oceans come under no one country's sovereignty, it is difficult to reach an international consensus on the use of drift nets. Japan, Taiwan and South Korea have agreed to abide by a voluntary UN resolution to discontinue drift net fishing by the end of 1992. There is no guarantee, however, that illegal drift net fishing will discontinue.

Are gated communities a reasonable response to crime?
Article Abstract:
An increase in suburban crime has sparked a debate over the moral and ethical aspects of gated communities. Some see gates as the only deterrent to crime, claiming that society is not safe, but homes can be. They claim that gates are not put up to segregate or discriminate, but only to protect the people inside them. Others see the gates as a sign of America's increasing class and racial segregation. By putting up gates and walls, they say, people are drawing borders between themselves and the rest of America.

Northwest's response
Article Abstract:
The Northwestern states have strict regulations relating to the fishing industry. There are controls on the number of permits to be issued, the quantity of fish that can be caught and the length of the fishing season. Yet, there is still a tremendous waste of fish. In their frenzy to capitalize on the limited time available, fishermen net in all they can and destroy whatever they cannot use. The shortened fishing time has also resulted in fishermen working almost continuously and compromising their safety.
