Robert May, a professor of ecology at Oxford, and a native of Australia, has been awarded the Blue Planet Prize by the Asahi Glass Foundation. May has worked on ways to model populations, and he warns that extinction rates are now 1,000 times greater than the average rate of extinction over the past 600 million years.
