The situation for independent US and Canadian oil and gas producers in the year 2000 is assessed. Many of these companies have become bigger with higher oil and gas prices.

CanOxy, partners strike oil in Gulf of Mexico

Calgary, Alb.-based Canadian Occidental Petroleum Ltd. has announced that it has made a significant oil discovery in the Gulf of Mexico. Canadian Occidental is working with Oklahoma City, OK-based Kerr-McGee Corp. and Houston, Texas-based Cal Dive International Inc. on the project.

EnCana sticks to hedge plan to smooth out volatile markets: Producer unfazed by big first-quarter writedown: CEO

The chief executive officer at EnCana Corp., Gwyn Morgan, stated that the company would stand by its price-hedging strategy to smooth out the effects of volatile oil and gas markets, unfazed by a large first-quarter writedown. EnCana is also planning to expand its North American gas business, aided by its bid to acquire Denver-based Tom Brown Inc. for $2.3-billion.
