Covent Garden - an historical perspective
Article Abstract:
London's Covent Garden, formerly a wholesale fruit and vegetable market, has been transformed over a period of 20 years into a major shopping and entertainment venue. Following the transfer of the fruit and vegetable market to a new site in Vauxhall in 1974, the Greater London Council began developing the 96 acre site to include two museums, 26 shops and six restaurants and it has become a major tourist destination. Covent Garden has been owned by Guardian since 1988. A brief history and description of the refurbishment of Covent Garden is presented.
