Paul Tellier, CEO of Canadian National Railways, initiated talks with CP Rail Systems CEO Bill Stinson over a possible merger or cooperative agreement between the two large Canadian rail lines. A merger seems likely because both firms suffered significant losses during 1992.

Montreal lawyer Yves Fortier has a chance to succeed Egyptian Boutros Boutros-Ghali as secretary general of the United Nations. The bilingual Fortier established an excellent diplomatic reputation during his 1988 to 1992 term as a Canadian ambassador to the United Nations.
