Fair trade labeling: Background: Rise of fair trade

Article Abstract:

Initial efforts in the 1940s by wealthier markets to import handicrafts from Third World countries led to 'world shops' in the 1960s that eliminated middlemen. The first independent fair trade labeling initiative began in the Netherlands in 1988, and by 1997, the Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) was formed to pool certification and marketing efforts under specified pricing and labor standards.

Fair trade labeling: Is it helping small farmers in developing countries? The issues

Article Abstract:

Fair trade labeled products like coffee, which indicate environment-friendly farming and fair price for small farmers, are being sold extensively in Europe and the United States. However, critics raise questions about the high price of the products, and ultimately hurting small farmers by forcing them to stay in an uneconomic environment even when global prices tumble.
