Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, sometimes called China's Siberia, contains oil and gas reserves estimated as triple those of the US. Half the population is Turkic, and the province is wracked with unrest. Its harsh environment includes the expansive Takla Makan, one of the world's largest deserts. Its Islamic separatists are profiled.
