G.P.S. collars: a new way to tell when the cows come home

Article Abstract:

Doctors Lew Hunnicutt and Bob Lyons are using collars fitted with Global Positioning System units to track the movements of Texas cattle. The research program, using equipment made by Lotek Wireless, was established to analyze real-time grazing behaviors of cattle and provide inexperienced ranchers with information on which areas to develop and which ones to leave alone. The satellite data determines where cows are grazing, then is combined with infrared imagery and maps showing various vegetation and soil types. The $5,000 tracking collars are battery-powered and are recharged and downloaded every week. The benefits of using high technology to observe cattle include less human intervention (and possible behavioral changes by the cattle) and visual tools that assist ranchers in understanding the need for proper range management.
