German giant plans global phone strategy
Article Abstract:
Deutsche Telekom AG is looking to develop an expanded worldwide telecommunications presence, hopefully with a U.S. acquisition. The German company, with more than $100 billion to spend, is waiting for the likely breakup of the merger deal between Sprint Corp. and WorldCom Inc. Though industry regulators in Europe and the U.S. have indicated their opposition to that merger, Deutsche is holding back on making a bid for Sprint until both companies officially call off their merger deal. Deutsche was previously interested in acquiring Sprint, but was prevented from doing so because of a contractual agreement with France Telecom, also a minority Sprint holder. Deutsche is also believed to be interested in acquiring Qwest Communications now that Qwest's acquisition of U S West has been completed. Regardless of which companies Deutsche acquires, it wants to become a major international telecommunications concern involved in wireless, fiber optic and Internet-based services.
