Sharing intellectual property such as open source software can make economic sense, as evidenced by Apache software that runs some 61% of all Internet servers. Consultant Robert Hart is trying to determine a framework for determining when intellectual property should be made available free of charge in order to lead to financial gain by selling, for example, more sophisticated versions of the free items.

Article Abstract:

The way in which capitalism abhors a vacuum is shown by the rise of Kazaa with Bit Torrent emule, the late Napster, and other peer-to-peer apps. Peer-to-peer will not be destroyed in the Australian courts as customers want the songs that the industry is refusing to deliver.
