Issues relating to the position of surpluses in defined benefit superannuation schemes are discussed. This is the matter of some debate in Australia and other common-law countries, fuelled by the practice of corporate superannuation funds accessing the surpluses of members of defined benefits in order to fulfill contribution requirements.
