Hewlett-Packard chairman, David Packard, will retire

Article Abstract:

HP co-founder and Chmn David Packard announces his retirement. The 81-year-old Packard says it is a good time for him to retire, now that HP's competitiveness is restored and a capable leadership team is in charge. Current Pres and CEO Lewis E. Platt will become chairman as well following Packard's departure. Packard and William R. Hewlett began HP out of a Palo Alto, CA, garage in 1939. Packard has been chairman since the company went public in 1964, with time out to serve as Deputy Secretary of Defense from 1969-71. He was the prime architect of HP's 1992 restructuring, which saw the elimination of an entire layer of management. The outgoing chairman also brought in the aggressive Platt to replace former CEO John A. Young. Hewlett and Packard issue a joint statement reaffirming HP's traditional commitment to quality, customer satisfaction, respect for employees and above-board business practices.

Hewlett-Packard Co's Exec VP and CEO Dean O. Morton believes that artificial intelligence will play a larger role in the worldwide computer industry and that computers will become smaller, use more color and utilize three dimensional graphics by the year 2000. Morton sees the growth of the computer industry contingent on a world market where technology crosses borders and skills move around easily. Hewlett-Packard made $1 billion in Japan, $30 million in the Soviet Union and nearly $30 million in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and East Germany in 1989.
