High court sides with writers
Article Abstract:
The US Supreme Court on Jun 25, 2001 ruled 7-2 that publishers cannot automatically put printed articles by freelance writers in electronic databases. The ruling requires newspapers and magazines to ask for special permission to reproduce articles written by freelancer writers in electronic databases--including Lexis-Nexis--and on CD-ROMs. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said in a decision that 'both the print publishers and the electronic publishers...have infringed the copyrights of the freelance authors.'
