Makers pump money into midsize cars

Article Abstract:

Intense competition in the mid-sized sedan market has caused car manufacturers to invest large amounts of capital in trying to remain competitive in this particular segment of the car industry. Some of the investments have included Chrysler's $1-billion bid to redesign a line of 2001 midsized sedan models, Ford's $500-million to $750-million investment for the 2000 Taurus and General Motors $650-million effort to remake its European Opel Vectra into the Saturn L.

With today's cars, it's hip to be small

Article Abstract:

The automobile industry in the United States has discovered that young consumers are buying cheap, small cars like Chrysler PT Cruiser and Volkswagen New Beetle. The industry mainly attributed the popularity of these cars to the consumers' rebellion against the minivans and sport- utility vehicles of their parents. Additionally, the cars also feature good fuel economy and refinements that are attractive to young buyers.

Hot sales pace leaves Japanese cars in cold

Article Abstract:

Sales of Japanese-brand cars are declining in the face of booming sales in the new cars and trucks, which are moving 10% ahead of 1998's robust pace and also on track to break the record of 16.1 million sales set in 1986. Japanse cars, once revered in the American market, are floundering because of relatively old designs that do not hold appeal to a market where new designs sell best. In addition, Japanese cars' price and demographic appeal place them in direct competition with the rising popularity of sport-utility vehicles.
