How the Netherlands handles euthanasia
Article Abstract:
Euthanasia is still a crime in the Netherlands. Doctors who practice it, however, are not prosecuted if they follow rules set by the Dutch courts. Two conditions have to be met before euthanasia is allowed: patients must make the request to die at their s own initiative, and they must be suffering from severe pain with no hope of recovery. Doctors must also discuss the diagnosis with a colleague. Euthanasia is not classified as death by natural causes in death certificates and the doctor must report the matter to the police. The death is then reported to the district attorney, who decides if the doctor should face charges.

California campaign
Article Abstract:
The Californians Against Human Suffering has started a signature gathering campaign for a proposed death-with-dignity initiative to be placed on the Nov 1992 California ballot. The proposed law provides that requests for assistance in dying must be done repeatedly. It also provides protection for nursing-home patients, guards against undue pressure on patients and requires psychiatric determination of the patient's mental health. Provisions of the failed 1988 Humane and Dignified Death Act such as a written request from the patient and a medical certificate to determine terminal illness were also included.

Washington initiative
Article Abstract:
Initiative 119 was a proposed amendment to the State of Washington's Natural Death Act which would have allowed 'physician aid in dying.' It had two requirements, a written request from a terminally ill patient and a medical certificate from two doctors stating that the patient is terminally ill. An awareness campaign launched by its opponents focusing on the lack of safeguards against abuse and the possibility that Washington might become a center for euthanasia led to the defeat of the initiative.
