Hydro-Quebec seeks U.S. export licence
Article Abstract:
Hydro-Quebec's US marketing arm, H.Q. Energy Services Inc., is seeking to get a US export licence for electricity by the middle of summer 1998. In an application filed with the US Department of Energy, H.Q. Energy Services wants to be able to purchase surplus power in the US and resell it to customers in Canada and Mexico. Although H.Q. Energy Services does not have immediate plans to export either to Canada or Mexico, it only wants to be prepared when the situation calls for it. The recent licence applications seem to be part of Hydro-Quebec's strategy to become a full-service North American energy producer and broker. H.Q. Energy Services is moving its headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA, from Montpelier, VT.

U.S. steel bill could spell trouble
Article Abstract:
A bill has been introduced in the US House of Representatives that proposes tough restrictions on steel imports. The bill is in response to a flood of steel imports from recession-hit regions that has hurt domestic manufacturers. While having little chance to become a law, the bill underscores a swelling support for protectionist measures that some fear could start a worldwide trade war.
