I.B.M. to invest $100 million in Groupe Bull
Article Abstract:
IBM will invest $100 million in Compagnie des Machines Bull, otherwise known as Groupe Bull, the French state-owned computer manufacturer. Groupe Bull reported a loss of $1.2 billion in 1990 and another $351 million in the first half of 1991. One consequence is that the French government now seems less inclined to favor French technological independence than it was. IBM, which has encountered difficulties of its own, is also more inclined than previously to seek out alliances. The agreement, which is not yet finalized, involves an IBM stake in Groupe Bull of between 5.7 percent and ten percent. The agreement calls for Bull to adopt IBM's reduced instruction set computing (RISC) chip technology, which would be used in Bull's high-performance multiprocessing systems, and IBM would sell portable computers from Zenith Data Systems, a Bull subsidiary, as part of the IBM product line.

Key engineer quits Next Computer to join Sun
Article Abstract:
Sun Microsystems Inc continues to pillage the computer industry by recruiting experienced software designers and executives familiar with creating easy-to-use yet powerful software. Sun's latest find is Guy Tribble who resigns from NeXT Inc to become a vice president at Sun's Sunsoft Inc software subsidiary. Tribble was a key designer at Apple Computer Inc and played a significant role in creating that company's renowned user interface. Tribble then joined Steve Jobs in founding NeXT Inc in 1988. NeXT claims that Tribble left the company after receiving a no confidence vote from NeXT's senior executives who did not believe him capable of running that company's software operations. Analysts say the move by Sun to hire Tribble reflects that firm's desire to improve its position in the business and home markets.
