IDA vows more intense investigations, stiffer fines

The Investment Dealers Association of Canada (IDA) announced that it will impose stricter fines and more intense investigations on wrongdoings in the brokerage industry. In a bulletin sent to its 170 members, the association also said that it will try to return all ill-gotten profits or commissions amassed by violators. According to IDA's director of enforcement, the move was made in accordance to the trend among regulators and self-regulatory organizations to be stricter on violators.

New CIBC boss promises shakeup

Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce's incoming CEO and chairman John Hunkin says he will reorganize the bank and cut costs. Hunkin, who will replace the retiring Al Flood, won over Holger Kluge, whose resignation after his loss is expected to give Hunkin free rein over management reorganization. Hunkin says he intends to create a flattened management structure and cut costs by splitting the bank into individual business units.
