The Koori Mail has achieved the unthinkable for an Aboriginal newspaper in Australia, by producing a profitable, award-winning national fortnightly paper. The paper, which was launched in May 1991, is owned by around 10,000 Aborigines and has given profits to help Aboriginal art and education.

A visit to the commune which were set up in 1972 at Byron Bay, northen New South Wales, Australia, is described. Many of the original families have now left the area. The grown-up children of the families which started the communes talk about their lives.
