SEC issues $50,000 fine to on-line brokerage

Datek Online, the fourth-bbiggest Internet broker, has been slapped with a $50,000-fine by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on May 18, 1999. The SEC's action, the first of its kind against an online brokerage company, came after a review of the company's trading policies revealed that the firm used as much as $50 mil a day of its clients' money to finance its expenses. Under the sanctions, Datek also agreed to employ an independent consultant to monitor its online dealings.

Colt CEO shifts to high-tech guns

Colt's Manufacturing CEO Steve Sliwa has refocused his firm's strategy to the development of so-called 'smart guns.' Smart guns can be activated by their owners only with the use of secret radio signals. Colt has also developed and is marketing a lightweight sports rifle. Sliwa's innovative strategies come at a time when Colt and the entire gun industry is being faced with numerous lawsuits for negligence and liability for crimes committed with guns.
