Sun Microsystems buys Beduin

Sun Microsystems Inc., headquartered in Palo Alto, CA, has acquired Beduin Communications Inc., a Java-based software company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. However, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Sun is aiming to bolster its consumer market with the Java software and to better compete Microsoft Corp.'s Windows CE operating system. The deal is also expected to equip Sun with Beduin's Java-based software for consumer electronics that include pagers, cellular phones and personal organizers

Call-Net merger sets new tone
Article Abstract:
Call-Net Enterprises Inc. of Toronto, Ontario, has received shareholder approval for its C$1.8-billion acquisition of Fonorola Inc., creating a company with enough resources to expand to new markets. Under the terms of the agreement, Fonorola shareholders has received a little more than 28 million Class B Call-Net shares equivalent to 39.75% of the acquisition value. The remainder, 66.25%, is in cash. Call-Net owns Sprint Canada Inc., Canada's second-largest alternative long-distance company.
