Job cuts spreading in truck industry
Article Abstract:
A cut in jobs is spreading in heavy and medium duty truck manufacturing plants. The Southwestern Ontario community of St. Thomas is being called the first casualty of the expected general economic slowdown. Freightliner, a North American truck manufacturing plant has announced a layoff of 3,745 people or 18% of its North American work force and will slow output by 18% because of slagging demand. The companies explain that the reason behind the layoffs and production cuts are: escalating diesel fuel prices, rising interest rates and a large inventory of used vehicle. The sale of heavy trucks in North America has risen from 225,000 in 1998 to 303,000 in 1999. On an average, 120,000 units were sold in the early 90's. It is expected that the downturn in heavy truck manufacturing industry will last for 18 months to two years.
