Acehnese independence movement (GAM) senior peace negotiator Teungku Zulfani was shot and killed by the Indonesian military on October 14 despite guarantees from the government that his role in negotiating a ceasefire would guarantee his safety. According to human rights groups, 1500 Acehnese were killed this year at the hand of the Indonesian military.
