"Lolita's" power plays, on and off the screen
Article Abstract:
The motion picture "Lolita" had a difficult time being produced in the US because of a federal law that prevents the portrayal in movies of sexual acts with children, but it developed into a mature film that probes the relationship between a 14-year-old girl and a 45-year-old man. A major US studio would not release the film but the cable channel Showtime did. Australia's Beyond Films will release the movie in Australia in April 1999. The movie portrays a man who is perhaps more sympathetic than the girl many social critics feel he abuses.

Fox: tales of the city
Article Abstract:
Fox Studios Australia opened in 1998 and was used to make a number of big-budget Hollywood movies such as 'The Matrix' and 'Babe: Pig in the City.' The sequel to 'Mission Impossible' is scheduled to begin filming at the Sydney studio. Australian filmmakers were concerned the presence of the large studio would jeopardize local small-budget films. Critics accuse Fox of coming to Australia to exploit cheap labor.
