London life loses round for 'freedom'

Article Abstract:

The Federal Court of Canada has ruled that Manufacturers Life Insurance Co of Toronto is entitled to use the word "freedom" in a trademark which it sought to register in 1990. London Life Insurance Co of London, Ontario, has sued Manulife for alleged infringement on its "Freedom 55" trademark. The federal court upheld a decision by the Trade Marks Opposition Board. London Life is planning to take its case to the Federal Courts of Appeal.

Heat could make cool businesses cold

The massive North American power failure forced many supermarkets and restaurants in Ontario to throw out much of their food supplies. Kitchener, Ont.-based M and M Meat Shops Ltd., a major meat distributor, may be forced to throw out its frozen meat products.

Loblaw loses another Net name battle

Article Abstract:

Ont.-based Loblaw Companies Ltd. lost an Internet domain name legal fight with a small Toronto company called Yogeninternational. The conflict, which focused on Loblaw's President's Choice trademark, was settled in arbitration.
