Manulife settles Ontario, B.C. class actions

Manufacturer's Life Insurance Co. (Manulife), a Toronto, Canada-based life insurance firm, has agreed to pay C$91 million as settlement to class action lawsuits about vanishing premium policies it received in British Columbia and Ontario, both in Canada. Policy holders in Quebec will also be offered the same benefits of the settlement even if the lawyer representing them has not agreed to the deal according to Manulife. The settlement deal of the lawsuits in British Columbia and Ontario have not yet secured the approval of the Toronto court.

Great-West raises dividend after profit jumps 40%

Great-West Lifeco Inc., a Winnipeg, Manitoba-based insurance company, has declared it is increasing the quarterly dividend on its common shares from 21 cents to 23 cents effective Sept. 30, 1998 payment. Great-West Lifeco decided to raise dividend after realizing an increase of 40% in profits for the the first six months of 1998 to C$228 million. A special meeting was also set by the company on Sept. 9, 1998 to allow holders of its common and first preferred shares to vote on a proposed two-for-one split of its common stock.

Guardian ordered to pay for defence of cab firm
Article Abstract:
Guardian Insurance Co. of Canada will have to pay for the defence of Bluebird Cabs Ltd., according to an order issued by the Court of Appeals of British Columbia. The Toronto-based property and casualty insurer earlier refused to pay for the defence of Bluebird in connection with separate actions filed against it four years ago. Bluebird President Norm Hardy, in an interview, failed to immediately estimate the total amount Guardian will be forced to pay.
