In the July 20, 2001 postal election for mayor of Melbourne, Australia, 19 candidates are standing for a position that carries little political power. Although all the candidates talk about plans to improve the city and overcome its problems, the Melbourne mayoral office is one of the least powerful in the country.

In 1999, Australian politician Jeff Kennett, lost his reelection as premier of the state of Victoria. Kennett has removed himself from public life, and has little commentary on the 2001 general election, except in his criticism of Paul Keating's disdain for Prime Minister John Howard.

Melbourne is conducting its first ever direct election for mayor and nine other City Council positions in July 2001. According to the Australian Electoral Commission, the election is using up more resources, for an election of its voter number and size, than any federal election.
